Exhibition Pieter Stockmans
An ode
21 February 2025 till 4 January 2026 | Maastricht Museum
From 21 February 2025, the Maastricht Museum proudly presents the exhibition An Ode, a unique celebration of the work of renowned Flemish designer and ceramicist Pieter Stockmans (born in Leopoldsburg, 26 October 1940). As an industrial designer at Koninklijke Mosa in Maastricht (1966–1989), Stockmans left a significant mark on ceramic art and industry. Now, he returns to the city that played a crucial role in his career and in the centuries-old ceramic tradition.
Maastricht’s ceramics have a rich history dating back nearly 7,000 years. This ancient tradition, reflected in the museum’s archaeological collection, forms a central thread in our permanent exhibition. With the work of Pieter Stockmans, we add a contemporary chapter to this ongoing story.
The exhibition places Stockmans' timeless creations alongside archaeological discoveries and ceramic masterpieces from past and present. From the earliest prehistoric earthenware objects to the fine porcelain of Koninklijke Mosa and the modern designs of Studio Stockmans. As a special highlight, the exhibition features a new work by Stockmans, created especially for this occasion, symbolising both the rich history and the future of ceramics.
This exhibition is a tribute to the material, the tradition, and the master behind these modern creations. Be inspired by the dialogue between past and present and discover the versatility of clay as a vessel for stories through time.
