Tourism Project VIA VIA vrings Roman history to life in the Euregion
Maastricht Museum aims for more visibility and experience of roman heritage through Euregion project
As part of the tourism project VIA VIA, Maastricht Museum and Centre Céramique, together with partners from the Euregion, are bringing the Roman past to life. This initiative creates a unique route full of Roman attractions, spanning nine locations in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Maastricht Museum, located in Centre Céramique, is one of these locations. Visitors will be able to embark on this unique journey through history in 2027.
Engaging Roman experience
There will be plenty to see, do, and experience in 2027. The project aims to enhance the visibility of Maastricht’s Roman heritage while focusing on visitor experience and digital visualisations. Highlights include an interactive exhibition at Maastricht Museum and Derlon Hotel Maastricht. In Voerendaal, visitors can explore an interactive landscape installation at Villa Voerendaal. Tongeren and Tienen offer interactive walking tours along Roman sites, while Aachen presents a Roman city walk showcasing a different side of the city. The Roman Museum in Heerlen and the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren will provide a fully immersive experience through "immersive rooms." Meanwhile, Museum Zitadelle in Jülich will feature an interactive exhibition, and in Simpelveld, visitors can discover a cross-border Roman landscape park. Local entrepreneurs are also involved in enriching the experience with culinary delights and artisanal souvenirs.
“We are proud to highlight this significant piece of history in collaboration with all these colleagues and partners. By telling these connected and multi-voiced stories across borders, we make the bigger picture visible. We aim to serve as a (Roman) bridge between Belgian, Dutch, and German partners.
And for those who can’t wait until 2027 – there is already so much to discover about the Romans in our Maastricht Museum.”
Wim Hupperetz, directeur Centre Céramique
