Leve het Maastrichtien!

The period in Earth's history between 72 and 66 million years ago is globally referred to as the Maastrichtian. During that time, Tyrannosaurus rex lived in North America, and Mosasaurs and sea turtles swam in a warm sea here. How do we know that? And why is this period named after the city of Maastricht? But also; what traces do we see of it in today's landscape? These questions are answered in a brief overview of the last 175 years, aided by numerous fossils.
