Pieke Dassen: A Remarkable Figure of Maastricht

From 19 October | Maastricht Museum

Starting 19 October, the Maastricht Museum will feature a display dedicated to Pieke Dassen (1926-2007), a true legend in Maastricht. Dassen gained fame through his Poesjenellenkelder in the Dinghuis, where he staged unforgettable performances with his handmade puppets and set pieces. This theatre, rooted in the Antwerp marionette tradition, became known for its humorous and often political satire, establishing itself as a beloved institution among the people of Maastricht.

Beyond his puppet theatre, Pieke uniquely captured Maastricht's Vastelaovend (carnival). Each year, he transformed Café De Pieter in the city centre into a vibrant carnival chapel, painting expressive designs on canvases, windows, and walls. His artwork reflects the liveliness of the city and enriches its cultural identity.

Nationally, Dassen became famous as "August" in the popular children’s programme De film van Ome Willem, which aired between 1974 and 1989. His diverse body of work spans from intricate early etchings to colourful depictions of carnival, capturing his city in a unique light

The display at the Maastricht Museum features a carefully curated selection of his work, including his painting palette, tools, puppets, and a self-portrait with his iconic grey beard. There are also items that bring the rich carnival life of Maastricht to life. To this day, Pieke’s legacy is visible in Maastricht’s streets: a special plaque by artist Jonas van de Vosse hangs above the gate of his former studio on Bogaardenstraat 43, commemorating his cultural contributions. Additionally, he appears as a towering three-meter figure carried through local parades and processions.

Don’t miss this chance to catch a glimpse of the diverse work of one of Maastricht’s most iconic artists!
