Mini-Exhibition: Real or Fake?

From 1 October | Display Window, City Hall | Centre Céramique

We invite you to visit the Mini-Exhibition: Real or Fake? in the display window of the Centre Céramique’s main hall. This small but thought-provoking exhibition explores the question: how can you tell if something is real or fake? And does it even matter? What do you feel when viewing an authentic object, and does a replica evoke the same sensations?

In this exhibition, we delve into the world of World War II, showcasing a range of unique objects, each telling its own story. You’ll find original war medals and uniform patches, items genuinely used during the war. Alongside these authentic pieces, we also present replicas, such as recreated patches and model vehicles, which aim to closely resemble the originals.

There are also items that present a completely different approach to the past, like T-shirts featuring historical emblems or souvenirs from museum shops. How do these relate to the real artifacts? Does a T-shirt inspire the same feeling as an original wartime souvenir?

We also examine how World War II is portrayed in books and films. Consider both adult and children’s literature: how do these differ in their approach to the war? Discover whether films about the war remain faithful to reality or take creative liberties to keep the story engaging.

Lastly, we explore games. Games like Call of Duty allow players to experience war, but how close are these digital worlds to the reality of the war? Do they offer a true representation of what the war felt like, or are they primarily designed to be playable?

The exhibition demonstrates that there are many ways to experience and understand World War II—whether through authentic objects, replicas, or digital representations. We invite you to come and explore what is real, what is fake, and how each item makes you reflect differently on history.
